A deadly train crash in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive opposition criticisms regarding the pace and handling of the country's flagship infrastructure initiatives.
The disaster took place on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a rail link developed to join the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was designed to offer an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving economic development in the area.
“We are going to rigorously clarify the cause of this tragedy,” stated the head of state.
The president announced that, of the approximately 250 individuals on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in grave condition. The president stated plans to travel to Oaxaca to speak with those affected.
Key Undertaking of Former Government
The Interoceanic Train was a signature development scheme of the immediate past president, whose term ended the year before. This venture was closely associated with his leadership's strategic agenda for the southeastern region.
Another ambitious rail project from that period, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the comprehensive effort to stimulate the economy of a relatively disadvantaged part of the country.
Project Execution and Risks Apprehensions
The development of both rail lines was managed by the army, marking a significant increase of its role in national works. They were completed at an accelerated pace, defying predictions to be at least partly inaugurated before the end of that presidency.
However, this rushed timetable had also fueled significant questions over operational security.
- Sunday's accident was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
- This involves an previous crash this month when a train smashed into a truck at a railroad crossing.
- The other major rail project has also seen several non-fatal derailments.
Demands for Review and Suspension
In the aftermath of the catastrophe, the chief of a primary political opposition urged an immediate suspension in the development and management of all comparable projects.
This halt was requested pending a comprehensive independent investigation. The party emphasized that the loss of life "calls for swift accountability."
In response, the head of state maintained that the train had been running in full adherence to all security protocols. Promises were given that the government would continue to be "diligent" in both the construction and operation of these national projects.
