Individuals Discontinuing Anti-Obesity Medications Gain Back Pounds Four Times Faster Compared to People Using Diet and Exercise

Obesity treatment involves long-term strategies.

New research reveals that individuals who discontinue blockbuster slimming jabs like semaglutide or tirzepatide tend to recover shed pounds at a significantly accelerated pace than those who stop traditional diet and exercise regimens.

Findings released in a prominent health publication demonstrates that while overweight people often shed about a fifth of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the weight is regained at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.

"Users buying such drugs must be aware of the potential of fast rebound weight gain when the therapy is stopped," warns lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of regain suggests a reversion to pre-treatment mass within about a year and a half.

Comparing Therapies

The analysis, which examined 37 of trials involving thousands of participants, contrasted the outcomes of the injectable medications with other pills.

Scientists emphasize that people who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone usually have a more gradual weight regain—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.

Explaining the Fast Regain

Experts believe the mode of action of the drugs explains the accelerated rebound.

These medications imitate a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates appetite.

"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 levels far above than the body's typical production could lead to the system to generate a reduced amount of its own natural hormone, and could lessen sensitivity to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.

"Withdrawal of this GLP-1 'fix' results in appetite is no longer kept in check, making binge eating far more likely."

A Chronic Issue?

Health authorities recommend the injections for individuals with obesity-related health risks, alongside recommended lifestyle changes.

A number of clinicians contend that, due to the likelihood of relapse, the therapy should be considered ongoing.

This view is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the findings "highlight the long-term character of obesity," akin to managing diseases like diabetes.

Patient Testimonies

Users who have come off the jabs describe a powerful resurgence of appetite.

"It felt as if a trigger flipping and I was suddenly ravenous," said a patient.

This difficulty is exacerbated if patients have not adopted lasting lifestyle or habit modifications during therapy.

Significant Adoption

Recent estimates show that millions of people in the UK have used these injections in the past year, with desire being substantial.

  • Adoption is higher among women compared to men.
  • The middle-aged age group shows the greatest level of interest.
  • A large proportion obtain the medications through private prescriptions rather than public health services.

Finally, researchers stress that while GLP-1 drugs are potent tools for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone solution and long-term success hinges on combined behavioural changes.
