Crawley Claims Ignorance of Captain Stokes' Provocative 'Weak Men' Comments

England opening batter Crawley suggested he had no knowledge of comments from captain Stokes about the dressing room not being "those lacking fortitude".

Stokes made those words in several interviews in the wake of England's loss in the second Ashes series versus the Australians previously.

In the lead-up to the third Test, where England are staring at a series loss at the earliest opportunity, the captain noted he had allowed his message to "drift around" among the squad.

"I have completed the necessary discussions in recent days that I required," remarked the England leader.

But, after the opener made 85 on the penultimate day in the third Test, he commented: "I missed those remarks."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. We take everything that is said in the media with some skepticism," Crawley continued.

Frank Discussions and Consistent Messaging

The captain made the "weak men" comment after his side were beaten in Brisbane to go two matches behind.

The England squad afterwards went on a break to Noosa in the gap between the second and third Tests.

Before the Adelaide contest, he said his team had held "honest" conversations and he had asked them to "display some fight" in their battle to stay alive in the series.

Yet, Crawley asserted the guidance from Stokes and coach McCullum had stayed consistent with their prior tenure in leadership.

"The atmosphere has been extremely upbeat, the same as always," noted Crawley. "It's on maintaining positivity, play our way, with lots of freedom. We believed we were capable of something special going into this game."

Australia Close of Historic Series Victory

The opener's wicket late on Saturday came during a decisive three-wicket burst by Australia off-spinner Nathan Lyon.

Lyon's three wickets in a short spell – including the wickets of Brook and Ben Stokes – left England 207-6 in pursuit of a notional target of 435 runs.

This means, Australia need four wickets on Sunday's last day to move to an insurmountable 3-0 lead with three Tests.

A loss would prolong the English team's winless run in this country to 18 Tests and condemn them to a fourth successive overseas Ashes loss.

This series will be completed in only eleven days of play – with England losing the first two Tests in rapid time each.

Not since 1921, when Australia sealed victory in the UK in eight days, has the destination of the Ashes urn been decided more swiftly. Australia have also triumphed in eleven days on two other instances in the modern era.

"This is disheartening," admitted the batsman. "Our goal was to win the Ashes and we're staring down the barrel at this point."

"There will still be plenty to play for and we'll definitely view it like that," Crawley added.

"It's been difficult. They're a very, very good team. It was inevitably hard touring here against them. They entered as the front-runners and they've proven why."

Ollie Pope's Place Under Scrutiny

Although the opener's performance in the third Test likely secures questions about his short-term future in the England team, Pope looks under immense pressure for his position in the fourth Test on Boxing Day.

Pope fell for 17 runs in the team's second knock on day four, extending his modest returns versus the old enemy.

In 16 Ashes innings, Pope has never made a fifty and averages 17.62.

Only one other England player since 1900 – Amiss – has played as many times in the top six in the Ashes and recorded a lower average.

However, the opener said any suggestion Pope is under the microscope comes from "you guys" – meaning the press – "not inside the camp."

"The squad is fully aware how good of a player he is," added he. "He has had a good year if I'm honest."

"He has produced some really good knocks. This is noise from the outside. There's no chat like that on Ollie amongst the players," Crawley finished.
